Objects in Progress
Book Design
Design of the book “Objects in Progress”, which reflects on the development of objects and looks at them in their context.

The book “Objects in Progress” deals with the development of everyday objects in the course of human history. The publication focuses on the dynamics behind the change and development of objects, from primitive tools to modern appliances. The research covers various dimensions such as function, society, economy and technology: objects not only serve as tools to fulfill practical needs, but also reflect societal dynamics.
It examines how social changes can influence the development of objects, be it through the expression of status and identity or through cultural changes. Using a variety of examples, including the development of the Coca-Cola bottle, the bicycle and the toothbrush, this book illustrates the multiple forces that have shaped the form and function of objects. It also looks at exceptions, such as objects that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries and those that have not evolved despite obvious flaws. The work concludes with a reflection on the reasons for the continued existence of some objects and an open consideration of those that await further development.
“Objects in Progress” is a study on the relationship between people and objects and was published as part of the annual tour at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design.

Using significant examples, the processes of the objects influenced by function, society, economy and material are illuminated in color-coded chapters.

A look back is revealing: the development of objects always reflects the development of our society. Swimwear illustrates this particularly clearly.

Industrialization has contributed significantly to the further development of objects. Economic efficiency and the associated efficient production often changed the shape and material of objects.

The rediscovery of materials is still driving the optimization of many objects today. But not everything can be optimized. Some objects endure and are reproduced forever.
